An Inconvenient Death

Sulfuryl fluoride, with the common brand name of Vikane, is a toxic, odourless gas which targets the nervous system of living creatures and ultimately causes death. Used to treat termite infestations, the Greater Los Angeles area, where these images were made, is noted as having the highest emissions of sulfuryl fluoride in the USA.

This recently undertaken body of work was made during 2022- 2024 and includes images accompanied by a video piece. Like colourful circus tents set in sunny suburbia, there is a playful absurdity to this dark subject of the termite underworld eating away the crumbling structures. Death in paradise…

Exhibited in RHA Annual Exhibition 2024, PhotoIreland Halftone Print Fair, 2023.

Purchased for the OPW State Art Collection.
