Ordinary Life
'Ordinary Life' provides a visual metaphor for the human experience of living in today's world. The tremendous weight of complexity of modern life creates pressures which cascade down on us. Yet when we analyse this experience, it becomes clearer that many aspects of modern living are insignificant and trivial and are of our own making. When we stand at a distance from the images they portray a sense of this immensity, complexity and burden. When we move closer to the images, the detail becomes more evident.
Is there reassurance in looking at the details to see that they are made up of small bits and pieces of nothing much - trivia, in a sense - that people play football, that we eat cornflakes for our breakfast, that we take pleasure in doing a crossword puzzle...? Or, might it also leave a sense of disappointment associated with the ordinariness of one’s life - a sense which prompts the question 'is that it?'.
The images were printed on 100% acid free, archival Japanese Washi paper.
This work was exhibited in various group exhibitions, including EV+A, 2006
